2010 CLub Championship
Bolton By Bowland (CM) - December 5th - Proved a decisive day for Chris Reade who secured his ?fourth Club Championship in the snows of Bolton by Bowland. Chris successfully held off the challenge from Mike Johnson over the frozen course to take the title. Richard Mellon set the pace for the club from the outset but Chris knew he only had to beat Mike and settled in for a tactical battle. Quentin kept the pressure on the two and eventually split them at the finishing tape. Declan had a good run closely followed by Ian H, Lee Warburton and Alan Heaton. In the ladies race Emma Gregory had a fantastic run in the ladies race coming in second.
The final results are at the bottom of the page.
The previous race over the FFTT course was on a chilly day of high cloud, sunny spells and no rain. Report by Andy Walmsley;
Pam and Andy Farmer ably looked after registration, refreshments and timekeeping and I went out on the fell to perform the role of 'sneaky individual', running about to various points to keep an eye on the race and taking a few snaps whilst I was at it. (these will apear on the gallery page soon)
I set off 5 mins before the 1pm start and went up the eastern line to the col (CP1) where I watched the first 6 go through. Everyone in the race came via the western line, Richard leading with Chris and Mike in close attendance, followed by Leigh Warburton, Ian Hutchinson and then Ian Cookson at intervals. Once these were all on the descent to CP2 I dashed up to head off the leaders as they came up the fence side. Running up the ridge I could see Chris's orange vest already well up on the climb and I only arrived at the fence with a minute or so to spare.
Richard was leading here, with small gaps to Chris then Mike, and Rich was the first to start running as the gradient eased. It looked like he was making a strong bid for victory. I cut across to see them returning from the fence/gate (CP3) and as they passed me there was a variety of direct lines being employed across the rough fell. Chris's seemed to be most efficient though and he retook the lead on the descent to CP4 with Mike now slipping back slightly from the leading two.
Another burst of dashing enabled me to get ahead again and to photograph them as they climbed up to the final check at the summit. As they passed me, Chris still holding his lead, I could see Leigh and Ian H, some distance apart, descending the opposite slope towards CP4. I then continued up to the summit where I met Andy F. Whilst scanning the slopes from here Andy's sharper vision spotted Keith and Les apparently running much further down the ridge than they needed to. It later turned out they'd got confused as to exactly which kissing gates they were supposed to visit!
Well done to Chris who took 1min 45secs off his best previous time trial time to win. All 8 finished in good shape and in the following order.
1. Chris Reade 35:30
2. Richard Mellon 35:54
3. Mike Johnson 37:10
4. Leigh Warburton 42:08
5. Ian Hutchinson 44:17
6. Ian Cookson 49:53
7. Keith Denver 56:40
8. Les Orr 1:02:34
